12 American "Mind Diseases"
After 25 years of living in this beautiful country, I unequivocally can state the following observations.
1. The House Obsession
Americans love to own a house! You hardly rent as if it's something shameful. And, in order to do this, there is the need of MILLIONS of INDIVIDUAL HOMES!
That is not easy because it takes an endless territory to build them, mainly side by side! Sometimes, just a few feet apart so, from a side window you can see through the window of the home of the neighbor. π
Simply... insane!
What about instead of that, build a tall palace with beautiful apartments that will have big terraces with a great view? Or, even better, a big pyramid shaped building with hundreds of apartments and terraces full of plants and flowers while the next "pyramid" will be a mile away and the surrounding as an immense park with deers and other local fauna that will come to eat on your hands?
Absolutely... NO!
Much better to have a single home a few feet away from the ones to the side!
2. The Garage Syndrome
Have you ever noticed that the garage, very often, has the door closed and a car in front of it? In 10/20% of the cases, the owners have two cars so, inevitably, one will stay outside but, in the other 80%, the car is outside because the garage is full of JUNK! This "mind disease" is uncurable!
"Let's put that in the garage, instead of throwing it away, because maybe, in a not precise future, we will need it!!!"
3. The Phantom Basketball Hoop
Walking around, another thing that I often see on top of the garage doors, is a basketball hoop. I don't know if you occasionally see someone use it but, in 25 years, I never saw anyone use it! It's a great idea to have fun using that but, it's there just to give the illusion that, maybe, one day you'll use it.
4. Kitchen Gadget Collection
Kitchens are another perfect example of "mind disease". The most sophisticated tools to cut, mix, cook, preserve and so on, are there. Use them? Very rarely but they look very cool and give the impression that, if not today, they will be used soon.
5. The Doggy Bag Culture
Eating at a restaurant is another curious phenomenon. Just forgetting the absurd fact that you are eating pasta as a side for a steak π that is already "barbarian", what really kills me is the fact of asking for a box to bring home the food remaining on the plate.
6. Baseball Game Social Hour
At baseball, people come even 1 hour after the beginning of the game or go away 1 hour before the end. The people sitting there, talk about anything for all the time during the game but rarely about what happens on the field. Probably because it's rare that something happens on the field! βΊ
7. Gun Obsession
Having a gun is another fundamental "mind disease" of American life. I will not elaborate about this topic because there is no reason but, it's clearly... incurable!!!
8. Speed Demons
Driving very fast, in particular on the freeway, is another one. Maybe you don't know but, in this country, there are more than 3,000 (three thousand!!!) fatal accidents each month in a car collision! Basically, a September 11th each month as if nothing happened.
9. Roofing Madness
Going back the topic of houses, I constantly see redoing the roofs because they begin to leaking! Instead, the majority of the little homes in Europe, have on the roof only terracotta tiles - lasting 500 years compared to 10/15.
10. Bigger is Better Syndrome
The main mind disease that perfectly represents American Society is that Bigger is Better! It could be a car or a hamburger but it could be... anything! What is fundamental is that it's... bigger!!!
11. The Obesity Blindness
1 American in 3, weighs like the other 2 put together! This is probably the main "mind disease" of Americans. Food, food and more food shovel down in the mouth as much as possible for the principle that, "bigger & more" is better!
12. The Final Paradox
I left this for last because it's really something! The majority of Americans believe that "Global Warming" is a hoax and "Wrestling" is for Real! π
