A Few Considerations About Art Appreciation and Economical Value
When I was still living on the Emerald Coast of Sardinia (Italy) I was producing art and selling it.
Often, the potential clients were arguing about the amount of money I was asking in order to buy my pieces.
One time in particular, a guy was saying: "you found these pieces of wood on the beach, so why are you asking so much?"
I said to him: "when you buy a book, you don't pay for the paper and the ink used to print it. You pay for the idea!!! So, you pay 20 or 30 dollars just because the book is printed in millions of copies. But if the book was printed in only one copy, buyers should pay a million just to have that one copy!!! It is the same for my compositions. You pay for an idea, not for the 'wood' that is in it!!!"
Another sad consideration is that any artist is rarely appreciated in the context of his/her family (I'm a rare example). It's something really rare, even for the great ones in the past.
For their families, it's just a hobby, a pastime, a way to play at doing something that even they could do, in the remote eventuality that they would maybe do it if they wanted.
Something that makes me very sad, is what will happen to my things when I will not be here anymore. I'm not that famous to the point that my things would be put in a museum, so………….
Who will take care of them?
Will they be thrown away?
Destroyed, and maybe used as wood for the fire?
I think that, when I will be very old, I will write to all the people that I know (better, their kids!!!) and tell them to come and pick from my garden anything that they like, and bring it to their gardens or give it to someone younger than them.
Also, maybe I can give them to the people that already bought something from me but, the majority of them are in Italy, so too expensive to send them there.
Very sad, and I think that it is the destiny of every artist. So, I strongly suggest to any artist, to stop doing something modern and untraditional and begin to paint or sculpt something banal and clearly traditional, like flowers, squirrels, bears or eagles, so that, in the future, someone………. maybe, will keep it in their homes.
