The Coins of Saint Croix

When we were invited to go to Saint Croix in the Virgin Islands, we didn't hesitate a fraction of a second!!!

We will be there... yesterday!!!!

The Journey to Paradise

The place is unbelievably beautiful. The only negative aspect, is that it's really, really, far away. To go there you have to take 3 airplanes and, if by chance you miss your connecting flight, then you'll have to sleep in a Hotel (of course, offered by the airline company) and get a flight the next day and lose a day of vacation.

The Discovery

Anyway, without wasting words, I will stay on the... COINS!!!

As happens in Italy, in Rome, at the "Trevi Fountain", there is the tradition of turning your back and throwing a coin over your shoulder into the fountain. It's believed that, by doing that, sooner or later you'll go back to Rome.

The same thing probably happens in a beach of Saint Croix, where the American tourists, throw coins in the water hoping to go back there in the future.

An Unexpected Treasure Hunt

But, at that time, I didn't know about this tradition. I was just snorkeling when suddenly I saw something sparkling. At first I thought: "Is that an antique coin from a wreckage of an antique Spanish galleon?"

Unfortunately no. It was just a modern... coin. But as I kept snorkeling I found one more and one more. I was putting them in my bathing suit and when they began to be too many, I went ashore.

Of course, I will not say which beach it was so, I don't get competitors!!!!

From Beach to Art

Back to the US, I used the coins in one of my compositions and they are still there as a good memory of that period of my life.

Here are some pictures of the place, Gianni just before going in the water, Jessica and the coins now, in their eternal positions.
